Patrick dons a mortarboard

In recognition of Patrick's contribution to the popularisation of science over the past fifty years, he was knighted in November 2000. He has also been made a Fellow of the Royal Society, an honour he values Particularly highly. As the presenter of the record breaking Sky at Night Patrick was awarded a BAFTA in 2000.

As one of the longest serving members of the British Astronomical Association Patrick was awarded a special award of an Orrery in 2004 in recognition of his seventy years of membership. He has also been given the Goodacre Medal by the BAA and the Jackson Gwilt medal by the Royal Astronomical Society. He has also been awarded ten Honorary Degrees.

Also of note, in succession to Harold Wilson, former Prime Minister, Patrick was awarded Pipe Smoker of the Year.
